๐ฐ Profitable Smithing Methods
Metal Bars at Blast Furnace
The blast furnace is the best smithing moneymaker. Smith iron, steel, mithril, adamant, or rune bars depending on your level.

โ ๏ธ Not using a coal bag decreases profit and XP by about 50%
Smithing Dart Tips
Requirements: The Tourist Trap quest (10 Fletching, 20 Smithing)
Good alternative to blast furnace - no graceful or coal bag required, but slower XP.

|---|---|---|---|
| 35 | Regular | ~140K/hr | 13K/hr |
| 35 | Double | ~280K/hr | 27K/hr |

๐ญ Giants Foundry
Overview
Giants Foundry is a smithing minigame where you forge giant swords for Kovac. Unlocked by completing the Sleeping Giants quest. More engaging than blast furnace and offers decent XP with profit.
How it works:
- Provide alloy (bars or items)
- Create the mould
- Smith the sword using Trip Hammer, Grindstone, and Polishing Wheel
- Get paid based on sword quality
Getting there: Use minigame teleport in Grouping menu, or walk from Al Kharid
Optimal Strategy
Mix alloys: Add 14/14 of 2 different alloys (or 9/19 for more profit, fewer points)
Recommended combinations:
| Level | Alloy Mix | Profit/hr | XP/hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | Bronze/Iron | ~100K/hr | 95K/hr |
| 50 | Iron/Steel | ~120K/hr | 130K/hr |
| 50-99 | Steel/Mithril | ~90K/hr | 160K/hr |
โ ๏ธ Don't use Adamant or Runite bars - you'll lose money
Important Rewards
โข Double Ammo Mould: 2,000 reputation (essential for cannonball profit)
โข Smith's Uniform (full set): 16,000 reputation (20% XP boost at foundry)
โข All Moulds: 5,400 reputation (increases efficiency)

๐ค How to Choose Your Smithing Method
Recommended Path
Step 1: Start with Quests
Complete Knight's Sword (1-29) and Sleeping Giants (29-33). Fast and unlocks Giants Foundry.
Step 2: Try Giants Foundry
Play Giants Foundry to get rewards (Double Ammo Mould, Smith's Uniform, moulds). Gauge if you enjoy it - if yes, stay here. If no, move to blast furnace.
Step 3: Blast Furnace to 99
At 60 Smithing, you no longer pay foreman fees (just 72K/hr). Make gold bars for fastest XP, or make metal bars for profit.
Method Comparison
| Method | XP/hr | Profit/Loss | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold bars (BF) | up to 350K | -27M total | Fastest, requires items |
| Metal bars (BF) | up to 108K | Profitable | Requires coal bag |
| Giants Foundry | up to 160K | Profitable | Engaging gameplay |
| Dart Tips | up to 47K | Profitable | No requirements |
| Cannonballs | up to 27K | Profitable | Very AFK |
Ironman Tip
Buy ores from the ore seller, smith them at blast furnace, then use the bars at Giants Foundry for maximum efficiency. This way you're self-sufficient and still getting good XP rates.
๐ F2P Smithing Guide
Free-to-play Smithing lacks blast furnace and giants foundry, but you can still train efficiently:
F2P Training Path
| Levels | Method | XP/hr | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-15 | Bronze items (do quests) | ~10K | Loss |
| 15-30 | Iron items at anvil | ~25K | Loss |
| 30-50 | Steel items at anvil | ~40K | Loss |
| 50-70 | Mithril items at anvil | ~55K | Loss |
| 70-85 | Adamant items at anvil | ~70K | Loss |
| 85-99 | Rune items at anvil | ~80K | Loss |
F2P vs P2P Comparison
F2P Limitations:
- โ No blast furnace (max 80K XP/hr vs P2P 400K)
- โ No giants foundry (no profitable fast training)
- โ No goldsmith gauntlets (no gold bar method)
- โ Must smelt + smith at anvil (slower, more tedious)
- โ Expensive (~50M+ GP loss to 99)
F2P Advantages:
- โ Anvil smithing still viable (decent XP rates)
- โ Rune items unlock at 85+ (useful for F2P pures)
- โ Superheating ores available with Magic
๐ก F2P Smithing is VERY expensive. Consider membership for blast furnace!

โ Frequently Asked Questions
What's the fastest way to train Smithing?
Smelting gold bars at the Blast Furnace with Goldsmith Gauntlets is the fastest method, offering up to 400K XP/hr. However, it costs approximately 27M GP from 40-99. Complete Knight's Sword and Sleeping Giants quests first for free early levels.
Can I make money training Smithing?
Yes! The Blast Furnace is excellent for profit. At 85 Smithing, you can make ~715K GP/hr smelting rune bars (107K XP/hr). Other profitable methods include dart tips, cannonballs (with double mould), and Giants Foundry with steel/mithril mix.
What are Goldsmith Gauntlets and why do I need them?
Goldsmith Gauntlets are a reward from the Family Crest quest. They multiply gold bar smelting XP by 2.5 (56.2 XP instead of 22.5 XP). They're ESSENTIAL for the fastest training method. Swap between goldsmith gauntlets (when depositing ore) and ice gloves (when collecting bars) at blast furnace.
Is Giants Foundry worth doing?
Yes! Giants Foundry offers up to 160K XP/hr with profit, making it the best alternative to gold bars. It's more engaging than blast furnace and rewards the Smith's Uniform (20% XP boost). Mix steel/mithril bars for best results. Perfect for players who enjoy minigame content.
What's a coal bag and where do I get it?
The coal bag stores up to 28 coal in 1 inventory slot, obtained from Motherlode Mine for 100 golden nuggets. It's essential for profitable blast furnace training as it dramatically increases XP and profit rates. Without it, your rates drop by about 50%.
Should I get the Smith's Uniform from Giants Foundry?
If you plan to train at Giants Foundry or do anvil smithing, yes! The full set costs 15,000 reputation and gives a 20% XP boost at Giants Foundry, plus speeds up anvil smithing. Buy gloves and boots first (3,500 rep each) for immediate benefit. It has no effect at blast furnace.
How long does it take to get 99 Smithing?
With gold bars at blast furnace: approximately 37 hours from 40-99 (400K XP/hr). With Giants Foundry: approximately 80 hours (160K XP/hr). With profitable metal bars: 100-120 hours (100-108K XP/hr). Total time depends on your chosen method and efficiency.
