OSRS Defence Guide 1-99

Train Defence for better armor and survivability

📜 Quest Unlocks🛡️ Better Armor😴 AFK NMZ

Defence determines your survivability in combat and unlocks better armor. This guide covers everything from pure accounts (1 Defence for PvP) to main accounts, quest shortcuts to reach 40+ Defence, training through Slayer for profit, and AFK methods at NMZ. Whether you're building a pure or training to 99 for raids, this guide will help you make the right decisions.

🛡️F2P Defence Training

F2P Defence training is very similar to Attack training. You can reach 99 in F2P, but it's significantly slower without members-only content like Slayer, NMZ, and superior armor/weapons.

F2P Defence Training Path

Level 1-20: Cows & Goblins

Start at cows near Lumbridge for easy kills. Use Defensive stance with any weapon. Upgrade to better armor as you level (iron → steel → mithril). ~15K XP/hr.

Level 20-40: Hill Giants & Flesh Crawlers

Hill Giants in Edgeville Dungeon are popular. Flesh Crawlers in Stronghold of Security offer better XP/hr. Use adamant armor and weapons. ~20-25K XP/hr.

Level 40-60: Experiments & Hill Giants

Experiments in Creature of Fenkenstrain give great XP. Upgrade to rune armor at 40 Defence. Hill Giants remain viable. ~25-30K XP/hr.

Level 60-99: Lesser Demons

Lesser Demons in Wizard's Tower basement are the best F2P option. Rune armor is your best defensive gear (no dragon or Barrows in F2P). ~30-35K XP/hr at high Defence.

Why Get Membership for Defence?

Membership dramatically improves Defence training with faster methods and better rewards:

  • Slayer: 50-80K Defence XP/hr while making profit and training Slayer
  • NMZ: 60-90K XP/hr AFK training with absorption potions
  • Quest XP: Skip to 40 Defence instantly with Waterfall Quest + others
  • Better Armor: Dragon (60), Barrows (70), Bandos (75), Justiciar (75)
  • Piety Prayer: 70 Defence + 70 Prayer = massive combat boost

Recommendation: F2P is fine for early levels, but get membership before 60 Defence. The difference in training speed and armor access (Barrows, Bandos, raids) makes membership essential for progression.

⚖️Pure vs Main Account

Should You Train Defence?

Defence is unique because some players deliberately keep it at level 1 for PvP advantages ("pures"). Consider your account goals before training Defence!

1 Defence Pure

Purpose: PvP focused accounts

Advantages:

• Low combat level (fight lower opponents)

• High damage output relative to combat

• Dominant in low-mid level PvP

Disadvantages:

• Can't wear most armor (rune armor requires 40 Def)

• Die easily in PvM content

• Limited quest unlocks (no Monkey Madness II, no Dragon Slayer II)

Main Account

Purpose: All-around gameplay

Advantages:

• Access to best armor (Bandos, Barrows, Justiciar)

• Better at PvM (bossing, raids, Slayer)

• Complete all quests and content

• Survive longer in combat

Disadvantages:

• Higher combat level (less advantage in PvP)

• Training Defence "wastes" time for pure PKers

⚠️

Important: Defence is Permanent!

You CANNOT reduce Defence once trained. If you might want a pure account for PvP, DO NOT train Defence! Most players train Defence for main accounts to access all content. Only stay 1 Defence if you're specifically building a PvP pure.

🛡️Armor Progression

Defence Level Unlocks

Level 1-40: Leather to Rune

Iron → Steel → Black → Mithril → Adamant → Rune armor at 40

Level 40: Rune Armor ⭐

First major unlock. Rune platebody requires Dragon Slayer I quest. ~150K GP for full set.

Level 60: Dragon Armor ⭐

Dragon chainbody/platelegs. Better stats than rune. ~2M GP for body, 500K for legs.

Level 70: Barrows Armor ⭐⭐

Guthan's, Dharok's, Torag's, Verac's. Great for PvM. ~2-5M GP per set.

Level 75: Bandos Armor ⭐⭐⭐

Best-in-slot melee armor. Bandos chestplate (~25M), tassets (~24M). Strength bonus!

💡

Wear Offensive Gear While Training!

When training Defence, wear gear with high Strength bonuses (not defensive bonuses). Killing enemies faster = more XP per hour. Only wear defensive gear when tanking at bosses!

⚔️Training Defence Through Slayer

Why Slayer is Best

Training Defence through Slayer is the most efficient method for most players. You gain Defence XP, Slayer XP, AND profit from drops simultaneously. At high levels, Slayer is very profitable (5M+ GP/hr at bosses).

Benefits:

• Train Defence + Slayer simultaneously (double XP gains)

• Profit from monster drops (1-5M GP/hr at high levels)

• Black mask/Slayer helm gives 16.67% damage boost

• Variety - fight different monsters instead of one spot

• Unlock boss variants at 95 Slayer (hydra, cerberus)

How to Train Defence via Slayer

Step 1: Get a Slayer task from a Slayer master (Nieve/Steve at 85 combat recommended)

Step 2: Equip black mask (imbued) or Slayer helm for damage boost

Step 3: Use Defensive style (Defence only) or Controlled style (all 3 combat stats)

Step 4: Complete task and return for new task

💡 Check out our Slayer Guide for detailed training strategies!

💰

Profitable Slayer Tasks

At high combat levels, Slayer tasks are very profitable:

• Gargoyles (75 Slayer): 600K-800K GP/hr

• Brutal Black Dragons (77 Slayer): 1-1.5M GP/hr

• Cerberus (91 Slayer): 2-3M GP/hr

• Alchemical Hydra (95 Slayer): 4-5M GP/hr

Training Defence with Slayer = getting paid to train!

😴AFK NMZ Training

What is NMZ?

Nightmare Zone (NMZ) is a combat minigame where you fight quest bosses. It's the most AFK combat training method - you can train while sleeping, working, or watching TV. Just sip absorption/overload potions every 5-20 minutes!

Location: Yanille (north of bank)

XP Rate: 60K-90K Defence XP/hr depending on stats and gear

Requirements: Completed 5+ quests with boss fights (more = better)

Cost: ~100K GP/hr for potions (breaks even with herb boxes reward)

NMZ Setup

Potions:

• 4-5 Overload potions (boost all stats by 5-19 levels, lasts 5 minutes each)

• 20+ Absorption potions (1,000 damage absorbed per dose)

Method:

1. Drink 1 overload (you'll take 50 damage)

2. Rock cake/locator orb down to 1 HP (enemies hit less damage = absorptions last longer)

3. Drink absorption potions to 1,000 absorption

4. AFK for ~15 minutes, then repeat

💡 Use Runelite's "NMZ Helper" plugin to alert you when absorptions are low!

Best NMZ Bosses

Enable these bosses only (disable all others for best XP rates):

• Count Draynor (Vampire Slayer)

• King Roald (What Lies Below)

• The Kendal (Mountain Daughter)

• Tree Spirit (Lost City)

• Khazard Warlord (Tree Gnome Village)

⚠️ DISABLE hard bosses like Desert Treasure bosses - they slow down XP rates significantly!

💡

Defensive vs Controlled Style

Use Defensive style for Defence XP only. Use Controlled style to train Attack, Strength, and Defence equally. Most players use Controlled at NMZ for balanced training!

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stay 1 Defence for a pure account?

Only if you're specifically building a PvP pure account. 1 Defence pures are strong in low-mid level PvP but weak in PvM and can't complete many quests. Most players train Defence for main accounts to access all content including raids, high-level bosses, and best armor!

When should I train Defence?

Train Defence last (after Strength and Attack). Higher offensive stats make Defence training faster. Exception: If doing Slayer, use Controlled style on whip to train all 3 combat stats simultaneously from 70+. This is the most efficient long-term strategy!

What's the fastest way to train Defence?

Quest to 40 Defence (Waterfall Quest, Fight Arena, etc.), then train via Slayer with whip on Controlled or Defensive. Or AFK at NMZ (60K-90K XP/hr). Slayer is better for profit + Slayer levels, NMZ is better for pure AFK.

What armor should I use while training Defence?

Use Strength bonus gear, NOT defensive gear! Killing enemies faster = more XP per hour. Wear your best offensive gear (Bandos, torture amulet, Strength bonuses) even when training Defence. Only wear defensive gear when tanking bosses.

Should I use Defensive or Controlled style?

Controlled is more efficient long-term (trains Attack/Strength/Defence equally). Use Defensive only if you want to train Defence specifically without affecting other combat stats. Most players use Controlled on whip for balanced training!

What Defence level do I need for good armor?

40 Def = Rune armor. 60 Def = Dragon armor. 70 Def = Barrows armor (Guthan's, Dharok's) + Piety prayer. 75 Def = Bandos armor (best-in-slot). Most players aim for 70 Defence minimum for Barrows and Piety access.

How long does 99 Defence take?

With Slayer: ~180-250 hours (also trains Attack/Strength if using Controlled). With NMZ: ~150-200 hours of AFKing. If you train Defence through Slayer from 70-99 using Controlled style, it's basically 'free' while training other combat stats!
