  • Find the best gear for any OSRS combat style with our free best-in-slot finder
  • Filter by attack style, defence style, and budget to optimise your melee, ranged, or magic setup.

Finding the right gear for your combat style can make or break your OSRS experience. Whether you are grinding Slayer tasks, camping a boss, or building a PvP pure, your equipment choices directly affect your DPS, defence, and overall efficiency. The wrong setup costs you inventory space, GP, and kills per hour.

Our best-in-slot finder removes that guesswork by filtering every item in Old School RuneScape by attack style, defence style, and account type — then ranking the best piece for each slot instantly.

What the Best-in-Slot Finder Does

Enter your stats or load them via hiscores and the tool generates an optimal equipment set for any combat scenario. You can:

  • Filter by attack style: melee (accurate, aggressive, controlled, defensive), ranged (accurate, rapid, longrange), or magic (normal, powered staff, trident-style)
  • Filter by defence style: choose what you're tanking — melee, ranged, magic, or overall defence. The finder re-ranks boots, shields, and helms based on the defence you need, not just max strength or magic bonus.
  • Budget and tradeability: toggle free-to-play only, members-only, or limit to tradeable gear if you're an ironman planning a grind.
  • Disable specific items: don't own a fire cape or infernal cape yet? Disable them so your BIS is what you can actually wear today, not theory.

Every slot is covered: head, cape, neck, weapon, body, shield, legs, gloves, boots, ring, and ammunition. Results show attack and defence bonuses, strength and prayer bonuses, and even tick-accurate DPS hints where relevant.

How to Get the Most From It

1. Start With Your Real Stats (Hiscore Import)

Manual stat entry is tedious and error-prone. Click Import from HiScores at the top of any calculator, type your display name, pick your game mode (normal, ironman, hardcore, ultimate), and your levels load instantly. The name saves locally, so next time it auto-fills. See our Hiscore Integration guide for setup details.

Your Defence and Prayer levels matter most for BIS — they change whether Baron gloves beat Ferocious gloves, or whether a blessed d'hide should outrank a god cloak.

2. Build for the Content, Not Just Max Bonuses

"Best-in-slot" depends on what you're killing:

  • Slayer (general mobs): maximise DPS — strength bonus > defence. A whip + defender often beats a halberd for single-target tasks.
  • Bossing (Zulrah, Vorkath, Theatre of Blood): balance defence style vs DPS. At Zulrah, magic defence outweighs melee strength; at Vorkath, ranged accuracy and protection prayers matter more than max strength.
  • PvP (pures, zerkers, mains): every combat level matters. Use the combat level calculator first to lock your bracket, then filter BIS by that bracket — the finder respects 1 Defence, 45 Defence, and 70 Defence builds differently.

3. Use Defence-Style Filtering

Most BIS tools rank by max strength bonus and call it a day. Ours doesn't. If you set defence style to magic, it pushes Karil's, blessed d'hide, and infinity boots up the ranks; set it to melee and it surfaces Torag's, Justiciar, and prims. That distinction saves you from bringing rune scimitar stats to a magic-heavy fight.

4. Plan Your Next Upgrade (Not Just Current BIS)

Your current best and your 5M-next upgrade are different answers. Disable what you don't own yet, note your current BIS, then re-enable those items one by one. The slot where BIS changes is your next real upgrade — not a side-grade that gives +1 strength for 20M.

Example: mithril gloves → barrow gloves is +8 strength and prayer — worth rushing Recipe for Disaster. Barrows gloves → Ferocious gloves is +3 — nice, but not before a whip or blowpipe.

Pro Tips From the Finder Data

  • Cape is your cheapest power spike. A fire cape (via Jad) or even a quested Obsidian cape beats most 10M upgrades early.
  • Weapon > armour for DPS. A 5M weapon upgrade usually beats a 20M chest upgrade for kills per hour. Check the max hit calculator after the finder to see the damage difference.
  • Blessing and ring slots are free stats. Don't skip an unholy blessing (+1 strength) or a brimstone/explorer's ring grind — they're often 30K-200K GP for permanent bonuses.
  • F2P vs members is night and day. Toggle F2P mode to see the honest ceiling — rune + amulet of power is your F2P BIS for a long stretch. Members jumps to dragon, barrows, and beyond.

BIS is step one. Close the loop:

Why Our Finder Stays Current

OSRS gear shifts with every major update — see recent additions like the Obligator, Wyrm gear from Wyrmscraig, and Sailing-related skilling outfits that touch combat indirectly. We pull item data from the same community database the wiki uses and update bonuses when Jagex hotfixes stats. If a slot ranking looks off after an update, refresh and it should reflect live bonuses within hours.

Open the Best-in-Slot Finder — free to use, no registration required. Load your stats, filter by style, and see your true BIS in seconds.

Sources & methodology

XP rates, requirements, and drop data in this guide are cross-checked against the OSRS Wiki and verified against in-game behaviour. Grand Exchange prices move daily, so treat GP/hr figures as estimates and confirm current prices with the OSRS Wiki price tracker before committing to a method.
