Your combat level determines which bosses you can fight, which PvP brackets you land in, and which content unlocks. Knowing exactly which skills push your next combat level — and which don't — saves weeks of misallocated grind and millions in wasted gear.
The combat level calculator supports every account build — mains, pures, zerkers, piety builds, ranged tanks, and magic tanks — with live hiscore import and bracket previews.
How Combat Level Is Calculated (So You Understand the Tool)
OSRS combat is a weighted formula, not a simple average. The game takes your base Defence/Hitpoints/Prayer block and adds your best combat style:
- Base:
0.25 × (Defence + Hitpoints + floor(Prayer / 2)) - Melee:
0.325 × (Attack + Strength) - Ranged:
0.325 × (floor(Ranged / 2) + Ranged)— so level 70 Ranged counts as 105 - Magic:
0.325 × (floor(Magic / 2) + Magic)— same scaling as Ranged
Your final combat level is floor(Base + max(Melee, Ranged, Magic)). New accounts start at 3; max mains hit 126, max pures stay much lower by design.
What this means in practice: At 70 Ranged, training 70 Magic adds zero combat levels if Ranged stays highest — the tool shows this instantly by previewing both. That's why pures can get 99 Magic at combat 60 without levelling melee.
How It Works
- Import your stats. Type your display name, pick your mode (standard, ironman, hardcore, ultimate), and click Load. The calculator pulls all combat-relevant skills (Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Magic, Prayer, Hitpoints) from the official hiscores via our proxy. Your name saves locally for next time. Manual entry also works for unranked or private accounts.
- See your current combat level and bracket. The header shows your exact level (e.g., 92) and progress to the next whole level.
- Preview the next bracket. Toggle "Show next level" to see: train 1 Attack → 93? 5 Ranged → 93? 7 Prayer → 93? The calculator ranks cheapest vs fastest options by actions needed.
- Lock your plan. Check your build's discipline: 1 Defence pure can't touch Defence; a zerker must stop at 45; a med build can push Defence and Hitpoints together.
No account registration — the tool runs entirely in your browser with live hiscore data.
Plan Your Build (Four Archetypes)
1 Defence Pures (Combat ~50-75)
Keep Defence at 1 while pushing Strength and Ranged. Every Defence XP ruins the build. Use the calculator to see how much Strength you can get per combat level — typically 8-10 Strength per level at low brackets. Pair with the Best-in-Slot Finder filtered to 1 Defence gear (black d'hide, rune scimitar, etc.).
Zerkers (45 Defence)
The competitive mid-game PvP build. 45 Defence unlocks Barrows gloves, Vengeance (94 Mage), and fighter torso without the 70 Defence tax that pushes you into main brackets. Calculator tip: after 45 Defence, every Defence level now costs you a main bracket — the preview shows when 46 would bump you from 75 → 76.
Piety / 70 Defence Mains (Combat 90-110)
Standard for bossing and raids. 70 Defence unlocks Piety via King's Ransom + Knight Waves, plus barrows and blessed d'hide. If you're a main aiming for Theatre of Blood or ToB, 70 Defence + 70 Prayer is your first real target, then push 90+ Hitpoints via Slayer — check the Slayer Guide for the best XP path.
Max Mains (126 Combat)
When every skill is 99, combat is 126. Use the calculator to plan the order, not just the levels: Attack/Strength to 99 first for DPS, then Ranged/Magic to 99 for versatility, then Prayer and Hitpoints passively via Slayer. The Max Hit Calculator helps you see when an extra Strength level actually moves your max hit.
Combat Bracket Cheat Sheet
| Goal | Typical Stats | Combat | Why bracket matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Defence Pure | 60 Att/90 Str, 1 Def, 31 Pray | ~60 | Wild 1-20 PvP + pure clans, can fight 50s |
| Zerker | 75 Att/99 Str, 45 Def, 52 Pray | ~90-95 | Barrows gloves + high strength without main brackets |
| Med Build | 80 Att/90 Str, 70 Def | ~105 | Piety, barrows, all mid-tier PvM |
| Max Main | All 99 | 126 | Every boss, raid, and PvP bracket |
Your Hitpoints tracks melee levels closely — at 75 Attack/99 Strength you'll be ~75 HP passively, so the calculator's Hitpoints preview matters a lot.
Pro Tips Before You Commit XP
- Prayer is the silent combat pusher. Every 4 Prayer levels = 1 combat after 40 (because
floor(Prayer/2)/4). A 43 Prayer pure who goes to 52 Prayer for Smite gains ~1 combat — that's the difference between 60 and 61 bracket. - Ranged and Magic scale double. Don't treat 70 Ranged like 70 Attack. In the formula, 70 Ranged ≈ 105 Attack for combat — that's why ranged pures stay low combat even with high Ranged.
- Hitpoints is not free. Training Slayer for 99 Attack passively gives Hitpoints XP (33% of damage as HP XP). Each Hitpoints level adds 0.25 combat. The calculator shows this so you don't accidentally level out of your pure bracket via Slayer.
- Verify with hiscores. After a session, re-import. Hiscores update within 15 mins of logout — seeing your true XP → next level progress (e.g., 12.9M XP = 98, 600K to 99) keeps you from overshooting.
