  • Fish at sea in OSRS: every new 5x5 fishing spot, which boats can catch what (Raft vs Sloop vs Skiff), and the full fish list from shrimp to anglerfish — plus the Teleport to Boat perk and Portal Nexus Last Boat.

Fishing at sea arrived with the 5 August 2026 update — you can now train Fishing while sailing your own boat. The new fishing spots work like land spots but bigger: fixed 5×5 tile areas where you catch the same fish, at the same rates, with the same tools, bait, and requirements as on shore.

You can't fish while the boat is moving or while locked into a facility, so plan your trips around stopping at each spot.

Which Boat Catches What

Boat type determines your fishing methods:

Boat Fishing Methods
Raft Harpoon, net, and lobster pot (Shrimp, Anchovies, Mackerel, Cod, Bass, Sharks, Lobsters, Tuna, Swordfish, Karambwan, Monkfish)
Sloop / Skiff Rod fishing (Sardine, Herring, Anglerfish with sand worms)

The Raft being the jack-of-all-trades gives it a real identity beyond the early game — Jagex designed it so it's never worth abandoning if you enjoy a laid-back fishing trip. Anglerfish (rod + sand worms) is the only fish catchable on all boats.

All Fishing Spots

Spot Fish Boat
South of Draynor / East of Port Sarim Shrimp, Anchovies, Sardine, Herring Raft (net); all (rod)
Musa Point Mackerel, Cod, Bass, Sharks Raft
South of Catherby Lobsters, Tuna, Swordfish Raft
North of the Karambwan spots (DKP Fairy Ring) Karambwan Raft
East of the normal Anglerfish spots (NE of the Piscarilius foodhall) Anglerfish All
North of the eastern-most Monkfish spots (Piscatoris Fishing Colony) Monkfish Raft

Notes

  • Karambwan requires a Karambwan Vessel and Karambwanji as bait, and the quest is still required for cooking them — the at-sea spot just saves you the trip.
  • Raw shark caught from your boat can't be stored in the Cargo Hold — a known issue hotfixed shortly after launch.
  • All catches can be stored in your Cargo Hold, which makes long multi-spot trips viable.

Other Sailing & Fishing Changes (Aug 5)

  • Teleport to Boat spell added as a Max Cape perk, following its addition to the Sailing Skillcape last week — the Greater Teleport Focus facility is still required
  • Portal Nexus now supports teleporting to your 'Last Boat'
  • Adamant keel is now listed in the Sailing skill guide

These pair well with the new fishing spots — Teleport to Boat plus a Nexus Last Boat save point means you can hop between the Draynor and Catherby runs in seconds.

Later Sailing Changes

  • Super fishing potions can now be stored in the Tackle box (Aug 12)
  • The at-sea fishing spots now have map icons (Aug 19), so you can spot them while sailing
  • Aligning with offshore spots is smoother (Aug 26): the spots no longer have a south-western bias, so you can approach from any direction, and your boat only counts as overlapping if it covers the centre of the spot
  • Courier Tasks now award Loot Sacks (Aug 26): 5 tiers of GP or boat-supply bundles, themed to the port you deliver to — a solid money-maker alongside fishing trips. Full breakdown in our Courier Tasks & Loot Sacks guide
  • September harpoon buff (2 Sept): Shark lures now cut harpoon delay — 1 lure 50% 5t→4t, 3 lures always 5t→4t, 5 lures always 5t→4t + 50% 4t→3t. Shark lure packs (100 lures, 1 Molch pearl) from Alry the Angler. Model it with Shark lures + dragon/crystal harpoon in the Fishing Calculator

Is Boat Fishing Worth It?

The rates are identical to their land equivalents, so boat fishing is about convenience, not XP gains. Its real value:

  • One inventory, many spots — the Cargo Hold lets you bank multiple fish types in a single trip
  • Layered training — fish while your ship takes you between Wyrmscraig, trials, or salvaging runs
  • Raft mains — a free-to-play-adjacent way to access Sharks, Lobsters, Tuna, and Swordfish with zero boat upkeep beyond the Raft itself

If you're grinding Fishing XP, stick with your current best land method — but if you're mixing Sailing with Fishing anyway, the at-sea spots are strictly convenient. Use the Fishing Calculator to compare at-sea vs land rates, map your Sailing levels with the Sailing Calculator, and see the full training context in our Sailing guide.
