Prayer is the most expensive buyable skill in OSRS — rushing 1-99 with dragon bones at a gilded altar can cost 120M+ GP. But you don't need to pay that to unlock every Prayer milestone. With the right methods you can get 43, 70, and even 77 for a fraction of the cost, and spread the remaining grind over weeks.
This guide shows you how to minimise GP/XP at every bracket. Use it alongside the live OSRS Prayer Calculator to compare costs for your exact start and target levels before you buy a single bone.
The Golden Rule: GP/XP Beats XP/Hour When You're Broke
Most Prayer guides chase XP/hour. Budget training flips that. Your real metric is GP per XP — how many coins you pay for each point of Prayer XP. A method giving 150K XP/hr at 4 GP/XP is better for a low cash stack than 300K XP/hr at 12 GP/XP, especially when you can train in shorter daily blocks.
Three principles keep costs low:
- Milestones, not max. Get 43 for protection prayers, then 52 for Smite, then 70 for Piety. Each unlock pays for itself in bossing and Slayer before you fund the next push.
- Split the grind. Buying 10K dragon bones at once forces you to pay peak GE prices. Buying 500 at a time lets you snipe dips on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when prices are typically lowest.
- Use the calculator as your ledger. Run both a cheap and a fast scenario in the Prayer Calculator and screenshot the GP difference. That number is your savings goal for the next upgrade.
Cheapest Methods Ranked (GP/XP, Not Speed)
| Method | Level | GP/XP (approx) | XP/hr | Risk & Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ensouled heads (Arceuus) | 1-99 | 1–3 GP/XP | 50K-140K | Zero risk, reanimate at Dark Altar. Best: ensouled bloodveld (1,040 Prayer XP) and dragon (1,560 XP) from Slayer. Collect heads passively while training Slayer — you already paid for the kill. |
| Chaos Altar (Wilderness) | 1-99 | 4–6 GP/XP (after 50% bone save) | 200K-350K | 50% chance to not consume a bone. Bring only noted bones + house tab. Deaths are expected — budget 5-10% extra bones for resets. Best for 43→70 pushes on a mid-level stack. |
| Ectofuntus | 1-99 | 3–5 GP/XP | 70K-110K | No risk, no PK, but extremely click-intensive (30+ actions per inventory). Only worthwhile for ironmen swimming in bones from PvM. |
| Gilded Altar (hosted) | 40+ | 8–12 GP/XP (dragon bones) | 200K-300K | Safe, AFK-friendly, predictable. Most expensive of the cheap routes, but still half the cost of premium bones at the same altar. |
| Dragon bones at Gilded vs Superior/blood | 70+ | Superior 6–8 GP/XP but 3× bone cost | 400K-700K | Not a budget method — included only so you see the premium tax. |
Bottom line: Ensouled heads win GP/XP by a huge margin, Chaos Altar wins practical GP/XP if you want prayer XP without head farming, and gilded altar is your safe baseline for comparison.
Ensouled Heads: The Budget Engine
Ensouled heads scale with Slayer and Arceuus favour, not your cash stack. You need 100% Arceuus favour (3 hrs via library + soul harvesting) and the right Magic level for each reanimate spell. The real cost is runes, not bones.
Best heads for budget Prayer:
- Ensouled bloodveld head (34 Magic, 1,040 XP) — drops frequently from bloodvelds on task. Best head-to-rune ratio for 40-70.
- Ensouled dragon head (51 Magic, 1,560 XP) — slower to collect, but each head is worth six dragon bones at a gilded altar.
- Ensouled goblin/monkey (1 Magic, 130-182 XP) — useless past level 30. Skip them; sell for GP and buy bloodveld heads instead.
Route: Train Slayer to 55+ (bloodvelds unlock), collect heads in your Slayer log, then batch reanimate after each session. Don't buy heads on the GE unless you're a main with no Slayer plan — farming them saves 80%.
Chaos Altar: Halve Your Bone Cost — If You Accept PK Risk
The Chaos Altar in level 12 Wilderness gives the same 3.5× bone XP as a gilded altar, but with a 50% chance to not consume each bone. That mathematically halves your bone need: 1,000 dragon bones becomes ~500 used.
Zero-risk inventory: 26 noted dragon bones, house tablet, burning amulet, no armour, no rune pouch. If a PKer appears, you lose only the unnoted bones in your inventory (13 on average). The noted stack stays.
Math for 70 Prayer (737K XP): At 252 XP per dragon bone at Chaos Altar, you need ~2,926 bones on paper, but ~1,463 effective after the 50% save. Even with 5 deaths (65 bones lost) you still save ~45% vs gilded altar. That's 3M GP saved at current dragon bone prices — enough for a full Slayer gear upgrade.
When NOT to use Chaos: You hate Wilderness, you lose focus when skulled, or you can't play off-peak (weekday mornings have 70% fewer PKers than weekend evenings). Then gilded altar is worth the extra GP for sanity.
Milestone Budget Plan (Use This With the Calculator)
- 1-43 Prayer (50K XP, ~200 dragon bones at Chaos = ~400K GP). Do this first no matter what. Protect prayers unlock every bossing door. Use ensouled heads or cheap bones from Slayer; don't buy superior bones yet.
- 43-52 Prayer (73K XP, ~290 bones = ~600K GP). Get Smite for PvP and wilderness. Stay on Chaos or ensouled bloodvelds.
- 52-70 Prayer (614K XP, ~2,440 bones = ~5M GP at Chaos). This is your biggest budget milestone. Piety is a 25% attack/strength boost — often a bigger DPS increase than a 50M weapon upgrade. Fund this with one solid money maker: see our Money Making Guide and track GP/hr with Tempoross or Wintertodt if you're lower level.
- 70-77 Prayer (738K XP, ~2,930 bones = ~6M GP). Only if you need Rigour (74) or Augury (77) for your content. These require prayer scrolls (60-80M each from CoX), so wait until you own the scrolls.
- 77-99 Prayer (11.5M XP, 45K bones = ~100M+ GP). Optional end-game luxury. Spread over months with daily Chaos runs or ensouled heads from daily Slayer. No reason to rush unless you're going for max cape.
Run each milestone as a separate calc in the Prayer Calculator — set current/target XP to the milestone, note bones + GP, then buy only that batch.
How to Spend Less Over Time
- Buy bones on Tuesday/Wednesday mornings. GE data across Prayer supplies shows a 7-12% dip mid-week vs weekend. Avoid Friday night panic buys before a grind session.
- Never buy 99 at once. Price a 43→70 batch first. Use that GP for a Slayer or bossing upgrade that earns you more GP/hr, then fund the next batch faster.
- Stack ensouled heads while you train. Bloodveld tasks (55 Slayer), dagannoth, and nechs drop heads that you would otherwise throw away. One week of Slayer = 150-300K Prayer XP for free.
- Compare weekly, not daily. GE prices swing 10-15% with updates and events. Check the calculator every Sunday before your weekly buy.
- Pair with Construction planning. A hosted gilded altar via
07 Altarclan (World 330, Rimmington) is free — building your own altar costs 30M+ Construction. Use the House Planner and Construction Calculator to decide if a house is worth it at all.
FAQ
What should I target if I'm low on GP?
43 first, then 70. Those two milestones give 90% of Prayer’s value for 10% of 99’s cost. Everything beyond 70 is luxury until your GP/hr improves. Track which milestone you're at with the calculator’s level-to-XP lookup.
Is 99 Prayer mandatory?
No. Most accounts stop at 70 (Piety) or 77 (Rigour/Augury) and only finish 99 when cash flow is healthy. The utility per million GP spent falls sharply after 77.
Should I prioritize gear upgrades over Prayer?
Usually yes, once you have 43/70. Example: a whip → tentacle whip upgrade is ~3M for +5% DPS; 70→77 Prayer without Rigour scrolls is ~6M for zero upgrade. Buy the scroll first, then the levels.
Can ironmen use these cheap methods?
Yes — ensouled heads + Chaos Altar is the standard ironman path. Ironmen farm ensouled heads from Slayer (bloodvelds at 50+), use bones from bossing (Cerberus, Zulrah, Vorkath), and do wilderness altar runs with zero-risk inventories like mains.
What's the ultra-budget path from 1-99?
Ensouled heads to 43, then ensouled bloodveld/dragon to 70, then Chaos Altar to 99 with Slayer-sourced dragon bones. It's the slowest route (80-120 hrs vs 30 hrs premium) but can be done for under 20M GP if you farm most heads yourself.
Next step: Open the Prayer Calculator — enter your current XP, set 70 as your first target, toggle between Chaos and Gilded to see the GP you save, and lock in your next batch. When you're ready to plan the fastest route instead, see the Fastest Prayer Guide or the full Prayer Guide 1-99.
