If your goal is pure speed — get 70 for Piety this weekend, or push 99 before a new raid — this is the GP-spending route. You're trading coins for time, and every choice here is about XP per hour first, GP per XP second.

Fastest Route at a Glance (Mains, 2026 Meta)
| Phase | What to do | XP/hr | GP/hr burn | Why this phase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-43 | Quests: Restless Ghost (1,125), Priest in Peril (1,406), + Holy Grail (11K) & Rum Deal (7K) | Quest XP | Near free | Skips the slow bone grind entirely. You start Prayer at ~30, not 1. |
| 43-70 | Varlamore Teomat altar with dragon bones → blessed bone shards (290-340 XP per bone) | 280K-340K | 6-8M/hr | 15-35% more XP per bone than gilded (252). Best XP-per-bone in the game right now if you've done Children of the Sun. |
| 70-99 | Varlamore with superior dragon bones (690-805 XP per bone) OR dragon bones at Varlamore if GP-tight | 350K-550K | 12-18M/hr (superior) | Superior doubles XP/hr vs dragon, but costs 3× more per XP. Pick based on bank, not ego. |
| Fallback if no Varlamore | Hosted gilded altar (07 Altar CC, World 330) with dragon/superior bones |
250K-400K | 5-15M/hr | Safe, no PK, no wine. Slightly slower than Varlamore but zero extra hassle. |
Bottom line: Quests to 30-43, then Varlamore to 99 is the fastest path in 2026. Gilded altar is only your fallback.
Bones: What to Buy for Speed
Not all bones are equal for speed. Here's the speed ranking at gilded/Varlamore:
| Bone | Base XP | Gilded XP (3.5×) | Varlamore XP | GP/XP (approx) | Bones to 99 (13M XP) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon bones | 72 | 252 | ~315 | 8-11 | ~51K (gilded) / ~41K (Varlamore) | Best value speed — most players' pick |
| Superior dragon | 150 | 525 | ~747 | 6-8 but high total cost | ~24K / ~17K | Absolute fastest, but 120M+ total |
| Lava dragon | 85 | 297 | ~350 | 9-11 | ~43K | Wilderness-adjacent; not faster than Varlamore dragon |
| Wyvern / Dagannoth | 50-125 | 175-437 | — | 10-18 | 74K-29K | Niche, not speed meta |
Speed per GP pick: Dragon bones at Varlamore win for 90% of players. Superior only if you have 150M+ liquid and value every hour saved more than 3M GP/hr.
Varlamore: Why It's Fastest in 2026
Unlocked via Children of the Sun (requires ~70s combat, questline through Varlamore), the Teomat altar lets you convert bones → blessed bone shards (using jugs of wine). Each shard gives 290-340 XP for dragon bones vs 252 at gilded — that's 15-35% more XP per bone and per click, with the same offering animation speed.
What's needed:
- Children of the Sun complete
- Jug of wine per shard (buy from GE, ~1K each — negligible vs bone cost)
- Same house-altar setup otherwise: noted bones, coins for butler if you use a POH, or use hosted altar
Why it's faster, not just cheaper: Fewer bones per level = fewer banking trips, shorter session time, less fatigue. At 340 XP per dragon bone, 99 is 38K bones vs 51K at gilded — that's 13K fewer inventories.
Setup tip: Bring jugs noted alongside bones. Un-note both at the butler, make shards at the Teomat entrance, then offer. No extra clicks vs gilded beyond the shard step.
Gilded Altar Fallback: Still Excellent, Just Not Best
If you haven't done Children of the Sun yet, hosted gilded altars are still S-tier:
- Join
07 Altarclan chat — 24/7 hosts in Rimmington, both burners lit. - Bring noted dragon/superior bones + ~10K GP per 26 bones for butler fee.
- House tab → Visit house → Butler un-notes → Altar offers → Repeat.
Expect 250K-300K XP/hr with dragon bones, 400K-550K with superior, with zero PK risk and zero quest requirement. Perfect for low-stress sessions or when you want to watch a stream.
Use the Max House Planner if you're debating building your own altar — it costs 30M+ Construction and is rarely worth it vs free hosts unless you're also training Construction.
Fast-Path Milestones (Don't Skip These)
- 43 Prayer: Protect from Melee/Magic/Missiles. This is non-negotiable for every boss, Slayer task, and Wilderness trip. Rush it on day one.
- 70 Prayer: Piety (King's Ransom + Knight Waves). +25% Attack/Strength/Defence — biggest single combat upgrade in the game, often worth more than a 100M weapon.
- 74/77 Prayer: Rigour (dexterous scroll) and Augury (arcane scroll) from CoX — 60-80M each. Only push these levels when you own the scrolls; the prayers are useless without them.
- 99 Prayer: Max cape and completionist flex. Do it last, after your combat upgrades are done.
Do not brute-force 1-99 in one session. Even on the fastest route, 99 is 8-12 hours of solid clicking. Split it: 43 → 70 this week, 70 → 77 next, 77 → 99 when you're ready for max.
Fast-Path Checklist (Do This Before You Buy)
- Complete Restless Ghost, Priest in Peril, Holy Grail, Rum Deal for free early levels
- Complete Children of the Sun if you can — unlocks Varlamore (15-35% faster)
- Price dragon vs superior at today’s GE in the Prayer Calculator — check both total cost and time saved
- Buy only for your next milestone (43 or 70), not 99 — prices dip mid-week (Tue/Wed mornings are typically 7-12% cheaper)
- Set a timer: hosted gilded or Varlamore runs are 1-2 mins per inventory. 43→70 is ~200 inventories.
FAQ
Is 99 Prayer worth rushing?
For PvM mains, yes — Piety at 70 is mandatory, and 99 is cheap time-wise vs its account value. For PvP, stop at 52 (Smite) or 70. For skillers or budget builds, spread 70→99 over months with daily batches.
What is the best "speed per GP" option?
Dragon bones at Varlamore. You get 85% of superior's speed for 35% of the cost. Switch to superior only when your GP/hr from bossing (see Money Making Guide) exceeds ~3M — then time matters more than coins.
Should I go straight 70 to 99?
If your bank is 100M+ and your next upgrades are done, yes — one focused push is efficient. If you're still building gear, do 70 → pause → fund gear → 77 → 99. The calculator's cost snapshot tells you which pause saves more overall account progress.
Is Varlamore always better than gilded?
For XP per bone, yes (290-340 vs 252). For raw simplicity, gilded is one fewer click per bone and needs no wine or quest. If you hate the shard step or lack Children of the Sun, gilded is only ~15% slower.
