The Grand Exchange now trades above max cash. As of 30 September 2026, a single GE offer can settle any value up to about 2,149,631,130,647 GP using a combination of Coins and Platinum tokens. No more meeting strangers to buy a 3rd Age Pickaxe.
Here is exactly how the live system works, what changed for guide prices, and what it means for your trades.
How Beyond Max Cash Works
You place an offer as normal, and for the first time you can type a value higher than 2,147,483,647. When the offer completes, the game takes payment from your inventory first and then your bank, using whichever mix of Coins and Platinum tokens it needs.
- 1 Platinum token is always worth 1,000 GP.
- Item stacks, including Coins and Platinum, are still capped at 2.147B each.
- Only the GE trade itself goes above that cap; the system tops out near 2.149 trillion GP combined.
- Spare currency is refunded as change, and buy limits are unchanged.

The GE Tax Still Applies
High-value trades are not tax-free. The GE tax is 2% of the sale price, rounded down, and capped at 5,000,000 GP per item. A 5B GP item therefore pays the full 5M, which leaves the game through the item sink.
Previously, an item above max cash traded player-to-player and paid no tax at all. Bringing those sales into the GE turns a long-standing loophole into a steady gold sink.
Guide Prices Update Three Times Faster
One of the quieter but most useful changes is how guide prices move.
- Guide prices now update every 3 hours instead of every 24 hours.
- They can move by up to 20% per update, up from 5%.
- Lower-volume items, which previously never reached the trade threshold, now update too.
In practice, rare item prices should track the real market more closely, which helps both buyers and sellers.
Known Issue to Watch
Jagex has flagged that using the GE can convert Platinum tokens back into GP. Until that is fixed, the safe habit is to keep the exact coins you need in your inventory before buying so nothing gets shuffled.
What It Means for You
Rare item owners. You can list directly on the GE instead of hunting for a buyer, and you should factor the 5M tax into a large sale.
Flippers and merchants. Rare items now generate real GE buy and sell data instead of Discord price checks, so margins are easier to read. See our merchanting and flipping guide for methods.
Everyone else. Price discovery improves across the whole market, and the scam risk of in-person max-cash trades largely disappears.
What Is Coming Next
Jagex has more Grand Exchange work planned, including improved item search and clearer buy-limit indicators. When that ships, our Buy Limits tool will be updated to match.
FAQ
Can I carry more than 2.147B coins now?
No. Item stacks are still capped at 2,147,483,647 each, for Coins and Platinum tokens alike. Only the GE trade can settle above that by combining the two currencies.
Do I need to convert coins to Platinum tokens myself?
No. The GE handles the split automatically at the moment a trade completes. Converting manually at a bank is only useful if you want to control your inventory layout.
Which items can now trade on the GE that could not before?
Any item priced above 2.147B, such as the 3rd Age Pickaxe, 3rd Age Druidic robes, and high-end raid uniques when their price spikes on release.
