The Inferno OSRS Boss Guide
Challenges - Very Hard difficulty
Updated September 2026
The Inferno is Old School's hardest solo wave challenge: 69 waves of Jal creatures in Mor Ul Rek, capped by the level 1400 TzKal-Zuk. Beating it awards the best-in-slot Infernal cape, plus Tokkul and a 1/100 Jal-nib-rek pet. Entry costs a one-time Fire Cape handed to TzHaar-Ket-Keh, and there is no restocking between waves. This guide gives you a practical starting route, loadout direction, and decision-first checklist so you can get into consistent kills faster.

Boss Overview
The Inferno is a wave challenge in thechallenges bracket. Challenge encounters reward clean execution and mistake recovery over pure damage output.
The Inferno is an endurance test rather than a DPS race. Three 255-hitpoint pillars provide cover and the Jal-Nibblers exist only to chew through them, so clearing nibblers first protects the safe tiles you will need on later waves. Mid-run waves mix Jal-Ak blobs, Jal-ImKot meleers, Jal-Xil rangers and Jal-Zek magers, each demanding a different protection prayer and often a freeze or safe-spot to split the stack.
Your first Zuk attempt should prioritise survival over speed. Stand behind the floating Ancestral Glyph at all times, because Zuk's attack can hit 148 and cannot be tick-eaten. Kill the Jal-Xil and Jal-Zek that spawn behind you to defend the shield, deal with the JalTok-Jad at 480 hitpoints, and burst the four healing Jal-MejJaks that appear below 240 hitpoints.
Your current setup should match your trip objective. If you are learning mechanics, favor sustain and control. If you are already consistent, add damage gradually.
Prioritize completions first, then optimize speed once your clear rate is stable.
How The Fight Works
Entry and Setup
Start by setting your inventory rhythm and camera control before pressure ramps.
Mid Encounter Control
Prioritize safe positioning and threat order so each wave/phase stays manageable.
Resource Management
Use supplies reactively, not pre-emptively, so you have recovery options for mistakes.
Final Phase Execution
Close out The Inferno with low-risk decisions and controlled swaps over panic DPS.
Prep Checklist
- Lock one stable loadout before you chase max DPS variants.
- Pre-plan your inventory around your expected trip length.
- Set one clear objective for each trip (KC, task, uniques, or practice).
- Prioritize survival and wave control over greed damage.
Recommended Loadout
Elysian can be swapped for Crystal Shield (i). Kodai wand autocasts Ice Barrage. Bastion potion used only on waves 68-69.

Mechanic Checklist
Your consistency in wave control, resource pacing, and panic-free decisions is the biggest DPS increase.
- Kill Jal-Nibblers as soon as they spawn - every pillar they destroy removes a safe tile you need later in the run.
- Freeze or safe-spot the melee Jal-ImKot rather than tanking it; its melee hits far harder than the other Jal.
- At Zuk, never step off the Ancestral Glyph's line: his attack can hit 148 and cannot be tick-eaten or survived without cover.
Common Mistakes
- Over-prioritizing damage upgrades before mastering mechanics.
- Bringing too many switches and losing consistency under pressure.
- Staying too long on weak supplies and losing overall hourly value.
- Trying to speedrun before your baseline clear is stable.
Progression Targets
- Stage 1: Build a reliable The Inferno starter setup in Gear Picker and secure consistent clears.
- Stage 2: Optimize trip length through cleaner mechanics and inventory control.
- Stage 3: Add a stronger DPS variant and compare real run outcomes.
- Stage 4: Finalize a shareable The Inferno loadout set for your ongoing route.
Notable Drops
- Infernal cape
- Jar of stone
- Jal-nib-rek
