Shark Lures got a buff on 2 September 2026 that finally made the 3-lure and 5-lure setups worth thinking about. The catch: using more lures is a speed play, not an XP or profit play.
Here is the honest trade-off.
What Shark Lures Do
Shark Lures are a stackable fishing enhancer used while harpoon fishing for raw sharks. You configure how many to consume per catch, and they do two things:
- Increase your catch success rate (fewer failed catches)
- Reduce the action delay between catches
They are consumed per shark caught and can be stored in a tackle box.
The 1/3/5 Lure Tick Math
| Lures | Success rate | Action delay | XP per shark | Profit per shark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1x | 6 ticks | 110 | 752 |
| 1 | 3x | 5.5 ticks (50% chance 5) | 27.5 | 529 |
| 3 | 4.5x | 5 ticks | 22 | 83 |
| 5 | 6x | 4.5 ticks (50% chance 4) | 17.6 | -363 |
The September update added the tiered delay reduction: 1 lure has a 50% chance to shave a tick, 3 lures always shave a tick, and 5 lures shave a tick with a 50% chance of a second.
Jagex's original blog quoted the wrong tick numbers. The 3 September clarification confirmed the real effect is a 1-tick improvement per roll on a 6-tick base.
The Trade-Off Nobody Mentions
More lures means dramatically less XP per shark and worse profit:
- At 5 lures, XP per shark drops from 110 to 17.6, and profit per shark goes negative once you factor in the lure cost.
- At 1 lure, you keep most of your profit and still get a 3x catch success rate.
So the answer to "are shark lures worth it" depends entirely on your goal.
When to Use Shark Lures
- Use 1 lure if you want faster shark catches without gutting your profit. This is the balanced default.
- Use 3 or 5 lures if you are chasing speed, not XP: moon key loop halves, the Big Shark, or shark-based money makers where catch volume matters more than XP per catch.
- Use 0 lures if you are training Fishing for XP. The XP penalty is brutal at higher lure counts.
One more catch: using Shark Lures reduces your Heron pet drop rate. Jagex made this intentional so lures are not the best pet-hunting method.
Where to Get Them
Shark Lures drop from bosses and chests that drop large food quantities, including Thermonuclear Smoke Devil, Zulrah, Vorkath, Grotesque Guardians, Phantom Muspah, and Larran's big chest. You can also buy Shark Lure packs from Alry the Angler for 1 Molch pearl each, containing 100 lures.
They are tradeable on the Grand Exchange, so check the live price before committing to a 5-lure grind — the profit margin swings hard with lure cost.
The Verdict
The buff is real but narrow. Shark Lures are a volume tool, not a training method. Default to 1 lure for a modest speed bump, reach for 3-5 only when the drop you want is measured in catches per hour, and leave them off for XP and pet hunting.
