Mining & Smithing: Reforged is Jagex's proposal to rebuild both skills. It was announced at RuneFest 2026, and the poll passed the question of whether to explore a rework. A survey opened in-game in October 2026.

No specific changes are confirmed. Jagex is still asking players what they want. This page tracks what is known and what it would mean for training.

Part of the RuneFest 2026 reveal recap — every OSRS announcement in one place.

What Jagex Has Said

The stated problem is that Mining and Smithing are not fun in the moment and not well integrated into a player's journey. They mostly exist to lock quest requirements.

The goals:

  • Make both skills fun to train, not just efficient.
  • Make them rewarding enough to justify the time.
  • Integrate them with the rest of the game rather than treating them as quest gates.
  • Build a framework that can expand over time, the way combat has.
  • Respect legacy methods and the "old school" feel.

Jagex compared the approach to Farming and Thieving, where older methods coexist with newer designs such as Tithe Farm and the Varlamore wealthy houses.

The Survey

The survey is live in-game. You can reach it from a Poll Booth or the Account Settings tab.

It asks what you want changed, added or left alone. Jagex says none of the ideas in the survey are decided. The answers will shape whether each idea is pursued, dropped or rethought.

If you care about either skill, fill it in. This is the stage where feedback has the most effect.

What Could Change

Jagex has not published a feature list, but the framing points to a few likely areas:

  • Training variety: more active methods alongside the existing AFK routes.
  • Progression: a reason to train past quest requirements.
  • Integration: Smithing output that matters outside quests and diaries.
  • Dungeon content: Jagex mentioned the Chasm of Fire as an example of where more complex Mining and Smithing gameplay could live.
  • Legacy preservation: existing methods should remain viable.

Treat that list as direction, not a roadmap.

What It Means for Training Now

Nothing changes yet. Do not delay a goal because a rework might alter rates later.

What to watch:

  • Ironmen: Smithing is a long-standing bottleneck. A rework could change the best route to 99 and the value of ore drops.
  • Money makers: if Smithing output becomes more useful, demand for bars and ore could shift.
  • Quests and diaries: new requirements or changed methods could affect existing guides.
  • Calculators: our Mining calculator and Smithing calculator will need new rates if methods change.

For current methods, use the Mining guide and Smithing guide. They reflect the live game, not the proposal.

Timeline

Jagex has not given a release date. The sequence so far is:

  1. RuneFest poll on whether to explore a rework.
  2. In-game survey on what to change.
  3. Design and further polling, not yet dated.

Given the scale, expect the rework to land in 2027 at the earliest.

FAQ

Is Mining & Smithing: Reforged live?

No. It is in the consultation stage. Jagex is running an in-game survey and has not announced a release date.

What is the Mining & Smithing survey?

An in-game survey accessible from a Poll Booth or the Account Settings tab. It asks what you want changed, added or left alone.

Will the rework replace old training methods?

Jagex says it wants legacy methods to coexist with newer designs, similar to Farming and Thieving. Existing methods should remain viable.

Does the rework affect ironmen?

It could. Smithing is a major ironman bottleneck, so any change to ore, bars or training routes will matter. Nothing is confirmed yet.

When will Mining & Smithing: Reforged release?

No date has been announced. The consultation started in October 2026, so 2027 at the earliest is a reasonable expectation.
