Hardcore Worlds arrive on 4 November 2026. They are separate worlds with a fresh economy and a single life, not a new account type on the normal worlds.

Jagex published the full rules on 22 October. This guide covers how to start, exactly what counts as an unsafe death, and what happens when you die.

What Hardcore Worlds Are

  • Separate worlds from the main game.
  • Brand-new characters that start on Tutorial Island.
  • Main-game privileges: trading, the Grand Exchange and normal content access.
  • One life. Death is final unless you reset or transfer.
  • No XP or drop-rate boosts. You progress at the normal pace.
  • A fresh, permanent economy, separate from the main game.
  • No Bounty Hunter or Last Man Standing at launch.

The appeal is not faster progression. It is the risk, the race for early resources, and the chance to build wealth in an economy where nobody starts with a bank.

How to Start

A new NPC, Death's Delegate, stands near the Magic Instructor's house on Tutorial Island. Talk to him to enter Death's Office and accept Death's challenge.

Death's Office is now un-instanced on every world, so you can see other players there. It acts as the Hardcore Worlds hub for starting, resetting after death, and finding a clan.

What Happens When You Die

Death is processed in two stages.

  1. Normal death rules apply. For most deaths you keep 3 items, or 4 with Protect Item. PvP deaths use the usual Wilderness rules.
  2. You choose Reset or Transfer.

Anything that would normally go to your gravestone is gone for good, whichever option you choose.

Reset

  • Everything on the character resets: quests, stats, items, bank and protected items.
  • You start again as if you just left Tutorial Island.
  • You have unlimited resets.
  • Jagex is still reviewing a few outliers, such as the coins from the Stronghold of Security.

Transfer

  • The character is removed from Hardcore Worlds permanently and moved to the main game.
  • You keep your protected items, bank and other storages.
  • You cannot return to Hardcore Worlds on that character.

Which Activities Are Unsafe

Hardcore Worlds use the Hardcore Group Ironman death rules. That makes many activities that are safe on a normal HCIM count as unsafe:

  • Barbarian Assault
  • Camelot Training Room
  • Chambers of Xeric
  • Dream World during Lunar Diplomacy
  • Fishing Trawler
  • Inferno
  • Magic Training Arena
  • Nightmare Zone
  • Pest Control
  • Random Events
  • Rogues' Den
  • TzHaar Fight Cave
  • Inside your Player-owned House

Jagex says you should assume 99% of deaths send you back to Death's Office.

The following are still safe:

  • Castle Wars
  • Clan Wars
  • Soul Wars
  • The Fremennik Trials, only the fourth phase of the Koschei duel
  • The Fight Caves resurrection reward from the Karamja Elite Diary
  • TzHaar Fight Pit
  • Zulrah, only the Western Provinces Elite Diary resurrection reward

Bounty Hunter and Last Man Standing are disabled at launch. Jagex is open to enabling them later.

Escape Crystals

Escape Crystals are more important than ever, and Jagex is changing them across both Hardcore Worlds and the main game:

  • Every Hardcore Worlds character starts with an Escape Crystal.
  • The price drops from 75,000 to 10,000 coins.
  • Death sells them alongside Rick and the Mysterious Stranger.
  • Activating one now clears poison, burn and other status effects.
  • They still activate automatically after a period with no input, covering disconnects and crashes.

Broadcasts and World Firsts

Jagex will broadcast World Firsts and major deaths across Hardcore Worlds. Deaths above a certain threshold may include how and where the player died. Announced World First examples include:

  • First Fractured Archive completion
  • First TzHaar Fight Cave completion
  • First Grandmaster Combat Achievement completion
  • First death on Hardcore Worlds

The Economy

Hardcore Worlds are permanent and run at the main-game pace. Deaths delete items and money from the economy, which makes supply and demand genuinely different from the main game.

Expect early consumables, quest items and skilling supplies to be expensive. The first players to supply basic needs have the clearest opportunity.

Hardcore Worlds vs Hardcore Ironman

Hardcore Ironman Hardcore Worlds
Where Normal worlds Separate worlds
Economy Shared with main game Separate fresh economy
Trading No Yes
Death Downgrades to normal ironman Reset or transfer to main game
Boosts None None
Safe deaths Several Very few
Bounty Hunter / LMS Available Disabled at launch

Hardcore Worlds are not an ironman mode. You can trade and use the GE. The restriction is the single life and the separate economy.

World Switcher Changes

An engine update towards the end of November adds:

  • World type and region on the login screen selector.
  • Filters for game mode, region and members/F2P.
  • Activity labels on each world.
  • A compact view for players who prefer the old layout.

How to Prepare

  1. Decide your death plan now. Reset if you enjoy the race, transfer if you want to keep the account.
  2. Learn the unsafe list. Chambers of Xeric, Fight Caves, Inferno, NMZ and your own POH are the traps for experienced players.
  3. Buy an Escape Crystal early. At 10,000 GP it is affordable after the Stronghold of Security.
  4. Do not bring gear you cannot delete. Gravestone items do not transfer.
  5. Plan an early money maker. The fresh economy rewards the first suppliers.

If you are comparing account types, our ironman modes comparison and ultimate ironman guide cover the existing rules.

FAQ

When do Hardcore Worlds release?

4 November 2026.

Do Hardcore Worlds have XP boosts?

No. They run at normal XP and drop rates. Jagex explicitly ruled out Leagues or Deadman style boosts.

What happens if you die on a Hardcore World?

You either reset the character completely or transfer it to the main game. Reset wipes everything, including protected items. Transfer keeps protected items, bank and storages but removes the character from Hardcore Worlds permanently.

Are Chambers of Xeric and Fight Caves safe on Hardcore Worlds?

No. Chambers of Xeric, Fight Caves, Inferno, Nightmare Zone, Pest Control, Barbarian Assault, the Player-owned House and several other activities are unsafe.

Can you trade on Hardcore Worlds?

Yes. Characters have main-game privileges, including trading and Grand Exchange access, but the economy is separate.

Do you start with an Escape Crystal?

Yes. Every Hardcore Worlds character starts with one, and the price for extras drops to 10,000 GP.

Are Bounty Hunter and LMS available?

Not at launch. Jagex may enable them later.
