  • Legacy RuneScape accounts must move to a Jagex Account by 17 November 2026 or they cannot log in
  • Here is who needs to act, how to migrate, and what you get for doing it.

The full migration to Jagex Accounts happens on 17 November 2026. After that date, legacy accounts cannot log in until they upgrade.

If you already play through a Jagex Account, there is nothing to do. If you still log in with a legacy username or email, this is the deadline to plan around.

Who Needs to Act

Login method What you need to do
Legacy username or email Migrate by 17 November 2026
Steam No migration needed to log in, but a Jagex Account is required for the Launcher and website services such as Support
Apple Same as Steam
Google Same as Steam
Game Center Same as Steam
Existing Jagex Account Nothing

Jagex says more than 89% of active players already use Jagex Accounts.

What Happens If You Miss It

Your characters are not deleted. When you next try to log in, you are prompted to complete the upgrade before you can play. The disruption is access, not data loss.

That said, do not wait until the deadline. The upgrade is a one-time process that takes a few minutes, and doing it early avoids losing a session or a group event.

How to Migrate

  1. Go to the official Jagex Account upgrade page through RuneScape Support.
  2. Enter your existing username or login email and password.
  3. You do not need access to the email currently attached to the legacy account.
  4. Choose the mailbox you want to use for the Jagex Account.
  5. Set up two-step authentication on that mailbox.
  6. Move your characters into the Jagex Account.
  7. Log in through the Jagex Launcher and confirm the characters are listed.

After migration, you log in with the Jagex Account and then select the character, keeping its existing name.

What You Get

  • Up to 50 character slots per Jagex Account, raised from 20.
  • 20 extra bank slots per character for Old School.
  • Fancier Boots cosmetic.
  • Launcher sessions lasting up to 90 days, so you do not re-enter credentials every time.
  • Stronger passwords, MFA, backup codes and login notifications.
  • Live chat support with a J-Mod and better ticket management.
  • Easier subscription and account management.

For anyone with several alts, the 50-character cap is the headline change. The bank slots are the headline for anyone with one main.

Launcher and Platform Notes

  • Linux: the Jagex Launcher for Linux is available as a beta.
  • Mac: an Apple Silicon Launcher is due by the end of October 2026. The current Launcher will be updated ahead of the macOS 28 requirement.
  • Mobile: Jagex Accounts support mobile character switching for Old School.
  • Controlled devices: elevated permissions are no longer required to install the Launcher.
  • Third-party clients: approved clients such as RuneLite still work through the Launcher.

Common Questions

Does migration change my character name?

No. Character names stay the same. You select the character after logging in to the Jagex Account.

Can I still play multiple characters at once?

Yes. The same character cannot be logged into both RuneScape and Old School at the same time, which is also true of legacy accounts.

What happens to my existing MFA?

Migration replaces your character-level MFA. A new Jagex Account starts with email MFA by default, and you can add an authenticator app and backup codes in settings.

What if I do not have access to the old email?

You do not need it. The migration requires the login username or email and password, not verification of the old mailbox.

Can I use the Launcher without a Jagex Account?

No. A Jagex Account is required for the Launcher and website services, even if you normally log in through Steam, Apple, Google or Game Center.

  • Migrate before 17 November 2026.
  • Turn on authenticator-app MFA, not just email MFA.
  • Save your backup codes somewhere offline.
  • Confirm every character appears under the Jagex Account.
  • Install the Launcher and test a login before the deadline.
  • If you use Linux or an Apple Silicon Mac, install the current supported Launcher build now.

FAQ

When is the Jagex Account deadline?

17 November 2026. Legacy accounts cannot log in after that date until they upgrade.

Will I lose my characters if I do not migrate?

No. Characters are stored safely and you are prompted to upgrade on your next login.

Do Steam, Apple, Google or Game Center users need to migrate?

Not to log in. You do need a Jagex Account to use the Launcher or website services such as Support.

Does a Jagex Account give extra bank slots?

Yes. Old School characters get 20 extra bank slots each, plus the Fancier Boots cosmetic.

Can I migrate without access to my old email?

Yes. You need the login username or email and password, not access to the old mailbox.

How many characters can one Jagex Account hold?

Up to 50, increased from 20 in October 2026.
