Dungeons of Gielinor is Jagex's proposal to send players back into forgotten dungeons with new bosses. It was announced at RuneFest 2026 and is subject to a poll. It is not live yet.

The pitch: at least five new bosses in one release, the largest collection of standalone bosses Old School has had, plus new Slayer creatures, a short quest, a hard mode and skilling improvements.

Part of the RuneFest 2026 reveal recap — every OSRS announcement in one place.

What Is Proposed

  • At least five new bosses across a range of difficulties.
  • A mix of full boss encounters, demi-bosses and supporting creatures.
  • A short early-game quest.
  • New Slayer creatures, including a Gemstone Dragons task and a dedicated Slayer boss.
  • A new boss with a hard mode.
  • Small skilling improvements to overlooked dungeons.
  • Some bosses deliberately kept secret until release.

Jagex says the shortlist has around ten ideas, but the final roster is not settled. Access would use familiar requirements: regional access such as Varlamore or Morytania, plus low-to-medium Slayer or quest requirements.

Gemstone Dragons

The headline addition is a new Varlamore dungeon beneath Fortis.

Detail Plan
Location Varlamore, below Fortis
Intended level Mid to late game
Regular monsters Sapphire, Emerald and Ruby Dragons
Boss The Diamond Dragon
Slayer A Gemstone Dragons task that covers the whole family, like Metal dragons

The regular dragons are designed around clear weaknesses, so bringing the right combat style matters. The dungeon also has side content: hidden creatures, resources, skilling spots and environmental secrets.

The Diamond Dragon sits deeper in the cavern. You fight through the outer chambers and the creatures guarding the route before you reach it. Jagex explicitly warns players to bring antifires.

Ripgut

Ripgut is the early to mid-game entry point.

  • Location: Asgarnia.
  • Type: Goblin boss, tied to a short quest.
  • Audience: Players learning PvM, in the same spirit as Brutus.
  • Hard mode: A harder version focused on movement and reactions.
  • Hard mode rewards: Expected to be cosmetic only.

The standard fight is meant to teach fundamentals without requiring end-game gear. The hard mode gives experienced players a reason to return and newer players something to aim for.

Why Jagex Is Proposing It

The stated gap is between "I killed my first boss" and "I can do end-game PvM". Existing dungeons are often one-stop shops that players never revisit. Dungeons of Gielinor would:

  • Give newer players more places to learn.
  • Give experienced players reasons to revisit old areas.
  • Add Slayer targets that are worth doing outside a task.
  • Improve skilling spots in dungeons that have been left behind.

What It Means for Existing Content

If it passes, expect changes to:

  • Slayer task lists, with Gemstone Dragons added as a new task.
  • Varlamore access, which becomes more valuable for mid-game accounts.
  • Dragon hunting setups, since Gemstone Dragons are dragons and will reward antifire and dragon-hunter gear.
  • Early boss progression, with Ripgut joining Obor, Bryophyta and Brutus as a learning boss.

Our boss guides and Slayer guide will be updated if the content passes and releases.

Poll Questions

Jagex polled four questions:

  1. Should Dungeons of Gielinor be developed with at least five new bosses?
  2. Should a low-level goblin quest introduce Ripgut and unlock the encounter?
  3. Should the project include new Slayer content, including Gemstone Dragons and a dedicated Slayer boss?
  4. Should it include improvements to existing dungeons?

Rewards for the new bosses would be polled separately.

Should You Care Now?

If you are mid-game, this is aimed at you. Ripgut gives another learning boss, and Gemstone Dragons give Varlamore a new Slayer target. If you are end-game, the hidden bosses and the dedicated Slayer boss are the parts to watch.

Nothing is live, so do not train specifically for it yet. Keeping Varlamore access and a basic Slayer level will cover most of the expected requirements.
