OSRS Guardians of the Rift Guide
Master the Runecrafting minigame — XP rates, strategy, rewards, and point optimisation

Guardians of the Rift is the most popular Runecrafting training method in OSRS. Located in the Temple of the Eye, this minigame combines crafting runes with defending the Great Guardian — giving you XP, reward points, and the outfit of the eye all in one place.
Compared to traditional Runecrafting methods like ZMI, Ourania Altar, or Abyss running, GOTR offers more engaging gameplay, competitive XP rates, and the best RC outfit in the game. Use our Runecrafting calculator to plan your 1-99 route with exact XP targets.
How Guardians of the Rift Works
Game Cycle
- Mine guardian fragments from the giant rocks in the arena.
- Use the fragments to charge essence at the workbench.
- Craft runes at the altars that portals open to (rotating cycle).
- Place guardian stones at barriers to defend the rift.
- Deposit runes at the Great Guardian to earn points and XP.
- Craft a guardian core when the rift reaches full charge.
Requirements
- Temple of the Eye quest (requires 10 RC). You start the quest by talking to Wizard Persten south of the Al Kharid bank.
- Higher Runecrafting level = better altars = more XP.
- 56 Agility recommended for the short-cut (boosts work — summer pie at 51).
- Mining level affects fragment mining speed — higher = faster.

XP/hr assumes efficient play with optimal point strategy. Solo games yield higher XP but fewer points per hour.
Strategy & Tips for Maximum XP
Do These
- Always have a weak cell and overcharged cell in inventory — they speed up essence charging significantly.
- Use the agility shortcut at 56 Agility to save 8 seconds per lap.
- Prioritise crafting at the highest-level altar available to you.
- Place guardian stones at barriers between altar cycles to maintain point gain.
- Use the colossal pouch (85 RC) for maximum essence capacity.
Avoid These
- Don't waste time mining beyond what you need for your current cycle.
- Don't ignore barriers — they account for roughly 20% of your total points.
- Don't use elemental or catalytic points until you have the full outfit — outfit is the priority.
- Don't craft at low-level altars once better ones unlock — always use the best available.
Rewards & Points Spending Priority
Raiments of the Eye (RC Outfit)
Each piece gives 10% more runes when crafting. Full set = 60% more runes. Buy order:
- Hat — 75 elemental, 50 catalytic
- Robe top — 150 elemental, 100 catalytic
- Robe bottom — 125 elemental, 80 catalytic
- Boots — 50 elemental, 35 catalytic
Total: 400 elemental + 265 catalytic points (~12-15 hours of GOTR at 65+ RC)
Other Rewards
- Ring of the Elements — 400 elemental points. Teleports to elemental altars. Must-buy for RC training.
- Abyssal Needle — 750 Abyss Pearls (new in August 2026; previously 1,500 catalytic points only). Speeds up pouch creation and is worth getting early now.
- Abyssal Protector (Pet) — 1/4,000 drop rate per game. Cosmetic.
- Rune pouch (upgrade) — Lets you hold 4 rune types instead of 3.
August 2026 update: the Abyssal Lantern is now in the Temple Supplies shop and works outside of GOTR when burning Willow, Blisterwood, Magic, or Redwood logs (rune-boosting effects apply to base runes only). The Guardian's Eye now unlocks a permanent Rift Guardian metamorphosis instead of sitting in your bank — other colours unlock at their respective Runecrafting altars.
